Kona Brewer’s Festival Announces Bluegrass Bands for “Brews and Blues” Concert

Kona Brewers Festival 2015 The Kona Brewer’s Festival is blending brews and blues this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Festival.  We are excited to announce our line up for the “Brews and Blues” concert on Friday March 13th starting at 7:30 pm at the luau grounds at Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel -The Aloha Bluegrass and the Whipstitch Sallies!

AlohaBluegrassBandThe Aloha Bluegrass Band hails from the mainland U.S. and Alaska plays a mix of original and traditional songs that honor the first generation masters while bringing a fresh new energy to bluegrass and folk music. All the basic ingredients of great bluegrass are there – driving rhythm, soaring fiddling, hot picking, and sweet, tight harmonies. But what really grabs you is the passion and excitement they express through their music.

The Whipstitch Sallies are “bluegrass rockers with panache.” Four women command the stage with their electrifying presence, traditional instruments, and tight harmonies. Allie Burbrink drives the rhythm on open-back banjo and guitar while Kat Erickson holds down the groove on upright bass. Sam Herrin's blistering mandolin licks and Kona’s own, Katie Burk’s spirited fiddle leads kick up an exuberant racket that’s rooted in mountain music but Whipstitch salliesinformed by styles from country and jazz to indie rock.  Watch the Whipstitch Sallies video.

Tickets to the concert are $25 for adults and keiki 12 and under are free. Proceeds from the concert benefit the 2015 charitable beneficiaries that the Kona Brewers Festival supports. Tickets are available here and know every drop means brews for a better world!

We’re honored to work with artist Kuhao Zane in 2014

Every year we feature an artist who designs the logo and sets the stage for the festival to come. This year we’re honored to work with Kuhao Zane. The bold orange logo he developed captures the celebration and natural live spirit of Kona Brewfest with the lehua blossom, our official island flower. Here he shares his beautiful memories of good times in Kona:

Kailua Kona…. KBF2014Logo

Still to this day there is a musk in the air, a color to the sunset and a sound to the waves. The perfect environment for a brew!

I can remember from early keiki years leaving Hilo headed to Kona to attend Graduation parties, Baby luaus, Weddings and what not. Every trip, we park at Old airport right around sunset. As you get out of the car the whiff of Hawaiian food hits the nose, music in the back ground and kids playing in the parking lot were all indicators that you were in the right place at the right time.

Late into the night, aunties and uncles sang, danced and the music seemed to never end…. With every new beer that opened the one word that accompanied the sound of beer bottles ching-ing together?

KEALOHA!!!!!!

Our equivalent of the mainland "Cheers!” and the Japanese “Kanpai”. Literally, “With Love” every time in Hawaii.

KEALOHA! The sound of a good time in Kona.

SZKaiao & Sig Zane Designs with Kona Brewing Co. celebrate this good time of Kona Brew Festival 2014 by bringing together the pacific rim of drinking salutations in this years design!

Cheers, Kanpai, KEALOHA!

Alongside the Orange Lehua Blossom, a rare color of the flower of the big island. We not only salute the island and visitors alike but most of all we salute, KONA.Cheers, Kanpai, KEALOHA!

Aloha,

Kuhao Zane

Our Festival Gets Greener Every Year

If you were to host an all-day party for 2,000 of your friends and family, how much trash do you think you’d generate? If you were talking about the Kona Brewer’s Festival, then zero would be your answer, especially with sustainability coordinator Krista Donaldson

Zero Waste tables with volunteers --"Together we CAN trash rubbish!" says Krista.

Zero Waste tables with volunteers --"Together we CAN trash rubbish!" says Krista.

at the helm. Donaldson has brought Kona Brewers Festival to the point where it pre-cycles, recycles and composts 90% of the waste from 2,000 volunteers, servers and food and craft beer lovers at Brewfest. Industry standards dictate that 80% of waste is recycled and composted in order to be called “Zero Waste,” so in 2013, Brewfest exceeded this goal.

In 2013, two truckloads of food waste were composted for pig slop and compostable foodservice ware (forks, spoons, cups, etc.) were saved from getting wasted in Waikoloa Landfill. Additionally, five truckloads of recycling were diverted from the landfill from Kona Brewfest.

Donaldson is not one to rest on her laurels as she sees room for improvement. In 2007, she began steering the waste number even closer to zero by allowing no water bottles at the event and the installing of the Zero Waste tables. If you’ve been to Brewfest, no doubt you have noticed the brightly colored compost and waste bins positioned throughout the festival, with volunteers helping to show which waste goes where. These are called the Zero Waste tables and are instrumental to the festival’s on-the-ground success with sustainability.

But even before you see these bins (designed and painted by local elementary school students), the planning toward Zero Waste is well underway. “It’s all about connectivity and encouraging reuse,” says Donaldson. “Simple things can be done like holding on to those forks, re-using when you can and weaning people off of the reliance on plastic.”
For 2014, her sustainability goals for the festival include a couple of exciting innovations. The first is that she intends to have no paper plates for the delicious food the guests get to sample. Instead of paper plates, guests can eat off of locally harvested tileaves. Not only would this support the local economy, and eliminate the need for paper and bleaching agents, but it also brings Brewfest guests back to more traditional dining in Hawaii.

Another exciting innovation that Donaldson intends to bring to life is a re-usable “spork” for guests to take home with their reusable mugs. The essence of pre-cycling, this would eliminate having to compost and recycling dinnerware and makes a fun souvenir guests can take with them on all their travels.

Finally, Donaldson is encouraging restaurants coming to Brewfest to take in and take out reusable service-ware. Items like large tinfoil pans get too caked with food to recycle and head directly to the landfill. Instead of this fate, she is working out an incentive plan for restaurant to pack in and pack out large trays of food.
